Thomas Barrie, FAIA. DPACSA, is Professor of Architecture in the College of Design, NC State University. He is an award-winning architect, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, an Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Distinguished Professor, and a member of the NC State Academy of Outstanding Faculty in Extension and Engagement. In 2024 he received the NC State Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence, the highest faculty award bestowed by the university. He is the author of House and Home: Cultural Contexts, Ontological Roles (Routledge, 2017), and four other Books.
Professor Barrie has taught housing design for most of his career. He directs the College of Design’s Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities initiative. Its mission is to provide educational resources for government, non-profit and community leaders, students, and the general public, and innovative and applicable solutions to the housing and urban challenges that North Carolina communities face. His work has been recognized by a NCSU Alumni Association Outstanding Extension and Engagement Award (2021) and two NCSU Outstanding Extension Service Awards (2014, 2015). He currently teaches Housing: Policy, Culture and Production in the Pappas Program.
Professor Barrie holds a M.Phil from the University of Manchester (UK), an M.Arch from Virginia Tech, and a BA from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. He is a registered and NCARB certified architect.
