Bio

Joe Michael, AIA, is an award-winning architect and urban designer based in Raleigh, North Carolina. He has practiced architecture and urban design for over 20 years, with experience in Washington, DC, Boston, New York City, and Raleigh, and is licensed in North Carolina and New York.

Joe is a Senior Urban Designer at LS3P, where he develops thoughtful and elegant urban design solutions for district master plans, suburban retrofits, and vertically integrated mixed-use developments for both public and private sector clients. Prior to joining LS3P, Joe led the Urban Design Center within the City of Raleigh’s Planning Department, managing a multidisciplinary team of architects, landscape architects, and planners while overseeing numerous transformative urban design initiatives. From 2021 to 2026, he was the Director of Urban Design at JDAVIS, where he led mixed-use master planning and large-scale development projects across the Southeast. Before returning to Raleigh, Joe was an Associate Principal at Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) in New York, contributing to Hudson Yards, the largest private real estate development in U.S. history, and One Vanderbilt, Midtown Manhattan’s tallest office tower.

Joe is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Urban Land Institute (ULI). Joe holds a Master of Architecture from MIT and a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture from NC State University.
