The Pappas Program is proud to offer three new graduate-level courses next semester, in addition to our ULI UrbanPlan Workshop.

LAR 582.021: ULI Urban Plan Workshop

  • Instructor Adam Walters, PLA, ASLA, ISA

The Urban Land Institute’s Urban Plan for University’s workshop is a project-based learning curriculum that engages both undergraduate and graduate students. Over the course of the seminar, students take on roles and form teams to respond to a Request for Proposals for a fictitious block-scale project site. They must reconcile the competing agendas and consider tradeoffs to create a well-designed, market-responsive, and sustainable project.


LAR 582.022: How Cities Are Built: Fundamentals of Urbanism and Environmental Design

  • Instructors Joe Michael, AIA and Imran Aukhil, MBA, MArch

This course will give students an overview and understanding of how cities, primarily American ones, are built through the work of professionals in the design industry. Blending an overview of history, theory, building construction + technology, planning policies, and city systems. Students will receive a “crash course” in the fundamental components that impact the design of cities.


LAR 582.023: Real Estate Development Law

LAR 582.024: Real Estate Finance

Delve into the essentials of real estate investing and finance in this comprehensive course. Explore topics such as full cash flow statements including cap ex and depreciation, traditional & alternative loan types, tax strategies such as 1031 exchanges, Cost Segregation studies, and estate taxes. Discover creative financing options including hard money loans, profit sharing, and seller financing, alongside financial calculations such as NOI, Cap Rate, ROI, and IRR. Topics include residential new construction, fix & flip projects, commercial financing, syndication, and economic market conditions. Gain practical skills and insights essential for successful real estate ventures. Special topics & guest speakers focused on Commercial and Multi-family Financing, Paper & Pad Lot Development and Commercial Construction Budget/Financing.
